More Questions About McCain's Dirty Donor Refunds

The New Republic's blog, the Plank, has more questions for presidential aspirant Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) about the $20,000 in campaign donations he recently returned to the Wyly brothers. In 2000, the duo funded a costly ad campaign smearing McCain's environmental record.
MORE WYLY-MCCAIN QUESTIONS:
One thing doesn't quite make sense in the Wyly-McCain matter. According to FEC records, there were four donations from the Wyly family to John McCain's Straight Talk America PAC this year:
Sam Wyly: $5,000 on March 24
Cheryl J. Wyly: $5,000 on March 24
Charles J. Wyly, Jr.: $5,000 on April 28
Charles J. Wyly, III: $5,000 on April 28
As we reported earlier today, all four of these checks, totaling $20,000, were returned on April 29, the day after the checks from Charles and his son were recorded.
But if all the money was returned on April 29--after the McCain team says it determined that the federal tax evasion investigation into the Wyly family made the cash radioactive--how does one explain these comments from John Weaver and the Wyly brothers in The Dallas Morning News on May 14, two weeks after McCain gave back the money and the day before the Wyly fundraiser in Dallas?
"Senator McCain has made a career of always trying to look forward and do what's best for the country," said his strategist, John Weaver . "That began with normalizing relations with Vietnam. Once you can do that, you can do anything."

"Senator McCain has an extraordinary record of service to our country," Sam Wyly said through a spokesman. "I am supporting him based upon his record and the leadership he has displayed throughout his career."
His brother alluded to Mr. McCain's years as a prisoner of war and called him a "strong and effective leader. ... I believe Senator McCain will receive the support of many party loyalists."
The author of the piece, Todd Gillman, conducted his interviews the week before his column appeared on May 14. So for some reason when Weaver and the Wylys (through their spokesmen) talked to Gillman for an article about the Wylys giving money to McCain and co-hosting a fundraiser, neither Weaver nor the Wylys pointed out that McCain had already returned the Wylys' money and that the Wylys were banned from the fundraiser. Odd.
