At an oversight hearing this morning, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) grilled Attorney General Alberto Gonzales over the sudden departure of several U.S. Attorneys at the administration's request.
"How many U.S. Attorneys have been asked to resign in the past year?" Feinstein asked Gonzales.
"You're asking me to get into a public discussion" of personnel issues, Gonzales replied.
"I'm asking you to give me a number."
"I don't know the answer to that question," said Gonzales.
"You didn't know the answer when we spoke on Tuesday, but you said you would find out," Feinstein pressed.
Gonzales referred to a letter his office had sent Feinstein earlier in the week on the issue.
"I read the letter," Feinstein shot back. Gonzales denied the administration had any tricks up its sleeve and was only trying to do what was best.
"Do you deny that your office has asked U.S. Attorneys to resign in the past year?" Feinstein asked.
"I don't deny that," Gonzales said. "But that happens in every administration, during different periods for different reasons. . . Some people should view that as a sign of good management."
Questions from the panel moved on to other subjects, and perhaps Gonzales thought he was off the hook. Then Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) spoke up.
"If we take a break for lunch," Leahy asked him, "would it be possible to get the number Sen. Feinstein asked for?"
Gonzales fished around for an answer, and finally answered, "I think so." But then he said he couldn't get into a public discussion of personnel matters.
"I don't care about the people," Leahy shot back. "Just get us the numbers."

Democrats Move to Counter Bush Surge
President Bush's plan to send 21,500 additional US troops to Iraq was met with fierce opposition Wednesday as Democratic lawmakers introduced competing proposals aimed at reversing the president's plan to escalate the war.
California Congresswomen Barbara Lee, Lynn Woolsey, and Maxine Waters drafted legislation calling for US soldiers to begin withdrawing from the region within four to six months. Woolsey and Lee are co-chairs of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, and Waters is chair of the Out-of-Iraq Caucus. They announced details of the legislation at a news conference Wednesday.
"This legislation does what the administration has refused to do - namely, recognize the situation on the ground for what it is, an occupation and a civil war," said Congresswoman Lee. "The president insists on appealing to patriotic sentiments and fear with talk about victory and defeat in Iraq, but the truth is that you cannot win an occupation, any more than the US can win an Iraqi civil war. The longer we stay there, the worse it gets."
Woolsey, Waters and Lee's legislation goes far beyond the flurry of other bills that have been discussed among Democrats in the House and Senate over the past two weeks.
• Prohibits any permanent US military bases in Iraq
• Accelerates funding for military/contractor training of Iraqi forces
• Authorizes a wide array of non-military US bilateral and multilateral assistance for reconstruction and reconciliation in Iraq
• Prohibits US access to Iraqi oil production prior to the Iraqi government establishing clear rules for foreign ownership and participation
• Guarantees health care for US veterans of military operations in Iraq and other conflicts

As we wrapped up Day three of the trial.
Here is the bottom line:
Only 6 of 16 potential jurors made it through the screening process today. Walton needs a pool of 36 potential jurors.
Jury selection will continue into next week. So, the opening statements will not be January 22.
