"Prosecutor driven to 'do right thing'

Apparently, when Mr. Fitzgerald was first approached about the job in early 2001, he thought it was a joke because these appointments are typically awarded to politically connected lawyers. He isn't active in politics; in fact, he is registered as an independent.

"We have a long, rich history of political corruption in Chicago," Peter Fitzgerald says in an interview with the National Post. "I wanted someone who was independent of the politics of the state, independent of politics entirely, and I really wanted someone who was good."

Mr. Fitzgerald moved from his New York condominium to become the top federal law-enforcement official in Chicago, the third-largest city in the United States. Appointed by President George W. Bush on the former senator's recommendation, he was named U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois 10 days before 9/11.'

Let's see if it's humanly possible for the jury to come back with a verdict this week!

Good Morning Everyone! :)

Walton, Fitz and Wells are going back and forth on those two questions. It will be interesting to see the outcome of all of this. I hope the Jury gives us the truth soon!

From FDL..

Fitz: we couldn't disagree more. Perjury is the more specific count. The obstruction count includes language about the GJ. It generally says he obstructed the GJ, then it says, it was part of the obstruction that defendant made the following false statements. Then it goes on paragraph 33, to say that at the time of the statement he knew it was false. The sections we have provided are all about these issues. The obstruction is more general than the perjury charge.

Have a great Monday! :D

http://www.contracostatimes.com/mld/cctimes/news/nation/16808810.htmISLAMABAD, Pakistan - Pakistan on Wednesday rejected a claim by the U.S. intelligence chief that Osama bin Laden and his deputy were hiding in northwestern Pakistan, and that al-Qaida was setting up camps near the Afghan border.

Interior Minister Aftab Khan Sherpao, told The Associated Press there were no al-Qaida training camps in his country and U.S. officials had not provided any intelligence suggesting there were.

"We will act on any such intelligence, but so far they have not" provided any, he said.

Sherpao's comments came a day after Mike McConnell, the new U.S. intelligence chief, told the Senate Armed Services Committee that al-Qaida was trying to set up operations in largely ungoverned parts of Pakistan's northwest, along Afghanistan's eastern border.

I just Bryan (Brian?) York's comments --I know, :(--, and I think the neo-cons are really hoping for a hung jury at this point because otherwise, it's convictions on most of the counts.

Newt Gingrich says it was the Katrina victims fault! Now, that is the stupidest remark for idiots of the week award!

"How can you have the mess we have in New Orleans, and not have had deep investigations of the federal government, the state government, the city government, and the failure of citizenship in the Ninth Ward, where 22,000 people were so uneducated and so unprepared, they literally couldn't get out of the way of a hurricane." The Gerbil will try to cover his ass on this one. But, too little too late on this one. And since the Walter Reed mess is linked to Halliburton, this is a wet dream investigation for Waxman since he is investigating Halliburton. Tje money trail, PG, the money trail.

I read this nugget from FDL. Thanks Christy!:

Oh, and speaking of Dick Cheney, look who shows up in footnote 29, wherein the court discusses the number of people that could have presented extrinsic evidence regarding Libby's state of mind at the time in question. Mentioned are John Hannah, David Addington, Jenny Mayfield, and…oh, look, it's Dick Cheney. As the opinion says, the Vice President could have been called to testify

"concerning the issues he [Cheney] directed the defendant to address and upon which the Vie President expected the defendant would devote his time and attention."

Now isn't that interesting? Almost as though Judge Walton knows that the defense had no intention of calling Cheney because they didn't want him to talk about just that. (Perhaps because the answers Dick Cheney would have given during cross-examination would not have been altogether helpful for the defendant?) And yet, there it is, laid out all nice and neatly at the end of footnote 29.

This is not good for the defense since they intend to appeal if Scooter is found guilty. Walton is not happy to the fact of being hoodwinked.

Another update. Two more subpoenas in the canning attorneys. From Pelosi's blogsite, The Gavel:

Congresswoman Linda Sánchez, Chairwoman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law (CAL), announced this morning that her subcommittee will seek to issue subpoenas to two additional former U.S. Attorneys who were fired by the Bush Administration.

The CAL Subcommittee will meet on Tuesday, March 6 at 10:00 am in 2141 Rayburn House Office Building, to vote on issuing subpoenas to former U.S. Attorneys Daniel Bogden of Nevada and Paul K. Charlton of Arizona. The subpoenas would require them to testify before the subcommittee at its hearing scheduled for the same afternoon, joining four other former U.S. Attorneys who CAL subpoenaed last week.
