Happy Year End...

I wonder if Dick Cheney and Scooter Libby are making any new year resolutions?

I just received this email...

The EPA Closes its Libraries, Destroys Documents

Dear .....,

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has begun closing its nationwide network of scientific libraries, effectively preventing EPA scientists and the public from accessing vast amounts of data and information on issues from toxicology to pollution. Several libraries have already been dismantled, with their contents either destroyed or shipped to repositories where they are uncataloged and inaccessible.

Members of Congress have asked the EPA to cease and desist. Please call EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson at (202) 564-4700 and tell him that scientists and the public should retain access to this information. Urge him to immediately halt the dismantling of the library system until Congress approves the EPA budget and all materials are readily available online.

Please note: The EPA may tell you that the Union of Concerned Scientists has its facts wrong.

Sincerely,

Michael Halpern
National Field Organizer
Scientific Integrity Program

After their many criminal acts it's not much now that either can say to change it. Reading about President Ford's view of a loyal Republican looks like not even Libby can save Dick. Libby is like the loyal soldier but this time he should have looked to save himself. Bush should be looking for a real friend that he can appoint of Vice President who will pardon him like Ford did for Nixon. Ford laid a bomb on the Republican party and the White House. As he knew what he did wrong in 1974 he corrected in 2006. He planned to have his views aired by Woodward for the world to hear. The GOP can't get him to retract his statement or protect the Administration this time. Sweet as we heard all those wonderful remarks about how great, smart and caring Ford was as President from his GOP family. Only to have the bomb of how he disagreed the next day. Does the Republicans still honor a leader who totally disagreed and was the one who had to heal the country from that other corrupt President. You can bet Bush is smoking those mary jane's and drinking his booze this New Years.
Why hasn't Fitz let America see Randall as he's the go to man at the DOJ. The public should see what the spokesman looks like. I have a picture of him in my mind something like Orlando Bloom or Brad Pitt. I could be wrong or right.

What will be the resolutions for Dead Eye Dick and baby cojones Irve. Well, Irve can't ask to be tall! LOL! More and likely those two bastards are praying that their plans don't foil! But, both of them will seal thier fate.. Both of them are finished..

Interesting listening to Woodward's tape of Ford last night on the news. Ford told Woodward to release that conversation of his opposing the Gerbil about Iraq after his death. I think that Ford wanted to protect his legacy and release that huge guilt that he had done to the American people in the past when he pardoned Nixon. Maybe he didn't want history repeat itself and he knew that thie was the Nixon era all over again with some of the same players.. But, nevertheless, Ford screwed the Gerbil in death by the release of those tapes. It will be on the lips of people..

My gf taped Oprah with Obama. I watched it. He said someone interesting. Obama said that the world of politics have changed and become divided. The focus has been politics and wealth and not doing the right thing. Maybe that is what Ford did in the end: do the right thing and speak out against Iraq. We all have to look for the candidate for 2008 who will do the right thing for the country and for the American people rather than the political party...Also, Edward's book: Two Americas, which he written when he was running for office with Kerry (which I downloaded for free on Edward's website some time ago) has exactly come true unfortunately.

EPA libraries - well, nobody wants big government.

Let's save money and outsource the jobs to some government contractor. That's what happened years ago to the EPA libraries.

This is just a continuation and erosion of information - by shortsighted politicians (let's cut the debt save money etc) that should be used to make decisions based on real facts/research/data/statistics. Now we can just be like those other Eastern block countries and make-up the stuff!
It's not just important for the government to have that information; it's also used by the private sector.

Hmmm.. An update about Apple Computer and Steve Jobs:

Apple admits board minutes were falsified over Jobs options

Apple Computer yesterday admitted that records of the board meeting that handed chief executive Steve Jobs 7.5m share options were fabricated. But the independent committee investigating the illicit backdating of stock awards cleared Mr Jobs of wrongdoing.

In its report published yesterday Apple reiterated the independent committee's findings from October that, while Mr Jobs "was aware or recommended the selection of some favourable grant dates, he did not receive or financially benefit from these grants or appreciate the accounting implications".

In a separate statement, the chairman of the special investigative committee, former presidential candidate Al Gore, and the head of Apple's audit and finance committee, Jerome York, said: "The board of directors is confident that the company has corrected the problems that led to the restatement, and it has complete confidence in Steve Jobs and the senior management team."

Currently Steve Jobs doesn't run Apple Computer. The board and shareholders run Apple Computer. Jobs needs to be very careful having someone run his empire. Even though he is cleared in wrongdoing, he will raise eyebrow to the public who wish to invest in a company such as Apple Computer..

Folks,

Check this out from the Gerbil's website:

Presidential Message on Eid al-Adha

I send holiday greetings to all Muslims gathered to celebrate Eid al-Adha.

For Muslims in America and around the world, Eid al-Adha is an important occasion to give thanks for their blessings and to remember Abraham's trust in a loving God. During the four days of this special observance, Muslims honor Abraham's example of sacrifice and devotion to God by celebrating with friends and family, exchanging gifts and greetings, and engaging in worship through sacrifice and charity.

America is a more hopeful Nation because of the talents, generosity, and compassion of our Muslim citizens. This holiday reminds us of the values that so many of our citizens hold in common, including love of family, gratitude to God, the importance of community, and a commitment to respect, diversity, tolerance, and religious freedom.

Laura and I offer our best wishes for a memorable holiday.

And notice that the idiot President never mention the holidays in this country such as Hannikah and Kwanzaa!!! And now he reached out to Muslims in the celebration of Eid al-Adha. I don't think that the drunk knows what that celebration is. He gives his best wishes to Muslims yet racial profile Muslims in this country...

Eid ul-Adha (Arabic: عيد الأضحى), or Eid-e Qurban (Persian: عید قربان) or Kurban Bayramı (Turkish) occurs on the tenth day of the Islamic month of Dhul Hijja. It is one of two Eid festivals that Muslims celebrate. Eid ul-Adha is celebrated by Muslims worldwide as a commemoration of Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son Ismael for Allah.Others celebrate Eid ul-Adha as it marks the end of the Pilgrimage or Hajj for the millions of Muslims who make the trip to Mecca each year.

Yup, Depends..

It was just announced that Hussein is dead.. I know I know, GEF? Show me proof.. I know you will say that..

I dug this up. The Carter-Ford debate:

Ford berated Carter again for speaking in "broad generalities" and charged him with advocating defense budget cuts. Ford also made what most observers considered to be an important blunder. In response to a question asked by Max Frankel of the New York Times concerning the Soviet influence in Eastern Europe, Ford said, "There is no Soviet domination of Eastern Europe, and there never will be under a Ford administration." Frankel responded, "I'm sorry ... did I understand you to say, sir, that the Soviets are not using Eastern Europe as their own sphere of influence in occupying most of the countries there?" Ford responded, "I don't believe ... that the Yugoslavians consider themselves dominated by the Soviet Union. I don't believe that the Romanians consider themselves dominated by the Soviet Union. I don't believe that the Poles consider themselves dominated by the Soviet Union. Each of these countries is independent, autonomous, it has its own territorial integrity, and the United States does not concede that those countries are under the domination of the Soviet Union."

In response Carter said he'd like to see Ford "convince the Polish-Americans and the Czech-Americans and the Hungarian-Americans in this country that those countries don't live under the domination and supervision of the Soviet Union behind the Iron Curtain."
News reports about the debate were dominated by Ford's statement and its potential effect on the race. Most observers felt the debate proved to be a turning point and the key to Carter's narrow electoral victory. A post-debate Gallup poll on October 15 showed Carter six percentage points ahead of Ford, 48 percent to 42 percent.

Since the American people are pretty forgetful they'll think Saddams death has some bearing on the War on Terror and the gerbil thinks this will help his case for Escalating(surge) the war in Iraq with more troops!

Yes, GEF! And notice that the media is more focus on the execution of Hussein and not focused in that fact that there were never any WMDs from the get go and why we really invade Iraq? The Gerbil may think that Huseein's execution is in his favor but he is wrong on that. Bad timing. With now the release of Ford's conversation with Woodward and the 110 Congress investigation come January, the Gerbil may want wish to turn back time. Otherwise, everything that the Gerbil touches in 2007 will turn to sawdust...

Should Bush Be Hung Too?

"It looks like when you wake up tomorrow morning Bush will have had Saddam Hussein executed, hung. Brutal revenge? Primitive? Barbaric? Yeah. But I'm not crying over Saddam's carcass. The poor and the powerless and their innocent children get killed everyday as a result of decisions made by the wealthy and powerful. It's nice when ruthless political leaders take it in the neck. It happens far too rarely; it should happen far more often. I would hope Saddam's fate would put some fear into the Putins and Bushes of the world. It won't though. The question the members of the DWT team have been debating all day is whether or not Bush should also be hung. No one doubts that Bush deserves severe punishment for his gross crimes."

Columns/All_nudists_aren_t_eq.shtml

Gee, for a couple of guys who were all aflutter a few weeks ago about nude children and nude adults mixing at a nudist camp, U.S. Rep. Mark Foley and Gov. Jeb Bush are sure quiet about Club Natura.

Foley, in need of an issue for his run for the U.S. Senate, and Bush, who has nothing more important to worry about what with all of Florida's problems solved in the recent legislative session, got their underwear in a bunch a few weeks ago when they discovered that Lake Como, a Pasco nudist resort, has been running a summer camp for 11- to 17-year-olds from nudist families off and on over the past 10 years.

Naked kids at a nudist camp, a phenomenon that has been going on since the '30s, doesn't really seem to have caught on as an issue. This despite Foley's coming up with a report that a man who was once associated with an organization that began sponsoring the camps sold legal videotapes of children participating in nude events in other countries a year after the man had left.

Published August 10, 2003

Wow. Foley should know too back in 2003. Bastards.

P.S. Look at Saddam's lower teeth in photos. Looks like they caught a double, no wonder Saddam's wife said it wasn't her husband.

Lawyer Ends Up Dead After Taking On Rove
Wednesday December 27th 2006, 10:26 pm

It’s fishy as hell.

Paul Sanford, a prominent Aptos, California, attorney, who accused Karl Rove of treason in the Plame outing case, took a leap from the Embassy Suites Hotel in Monterey Bay on Christmas Eve. Police describe it as “probable” suicide, even though it appears Sanford was not depressed.

Saddam's execution needed to be timed around Eid al-Adha and that is why Bush mentioned it. I am sure his advisors (the Saudis) told him that when Saddam is executed, even more hell will break loose in Iraq, especially if it happens during the haj. The greeting was nothing sincere at all; it was all about getting on record that he reached out to some people he knew would be very angry about Saddam's execution. Saddam had those Kurds killed while he was still considered an ally of the United States. Of course, folks from other countries will see the hypocracy in the U.S. a lot faster than most Americans. If Bush ever mentioned Kwanzaa, Hannukah, Cinco de Mayo, etc. that would just make me wonder what he is up to or whose votes he is trying to get.

Ford has been in bad health for the past few years. He was very smart to release the interviews after his death. Then he could criticize in a very professional way without having to listen to those criticized snark back and defend themselves.

The clueless at NBC were trying to convince the American people that Ford pardoned Nixon because they were buddies and played an audio tape of Nixon calling Ford while he was still majority leader (or was that minority leader). Anyway, Ford pledged support but that was *before* Nixon resigned. Dear NBC, duh. Of course while Ford was still leader and before Nixon resigned he would provide support for the president. And NBC, you folks totally missed the irony that Bob Woodward did those important interviews with Ford released after his death. That speaks volumes, even without Ford saying one word. Ford could have had his complete pick of anyone to do those interviews. There is also a journalism award named for Ford and that would not have happened without Ford's approval. That speaks volumes, too.

As for the EPA libraries closing, geez, that's old news. That has been in the works for a long time. That is supposed to be a cost cutting measure. Libraries are not considered valuable anymore. The stuff Laura does for libraries is just for show and oriented around getting little kids to read. Overall, federal funding cuts for libraries the past few years have been quite large. If you all want to look at sneaky stuff, then go look at the lists of things the federal government that is supposed to be destroyed for national security purposes that is in government depository libraries(usually found at large universities). There is the sneaky stuff.

So, it’s official. Saddam executed. Whatever his crimes, it makes me sick that Bush and Blair are going to get away scot free.

Bush and Blair invaded Iraq because, they would have us believe, Saddam posed a threat to the rest of the world. WMDs can be fired at British territory (Cyprus?) in 45 mins, were the news headlines back in ‘03.

So, they went in there knowing this to be untrue.

In my books that counts as a war crime, the moral equivalent of Hitler’s invasion of Poland, which took place after some German soldiers dressed as poles fired on some German soldiers.

Saddam is captured, and, after a show-trial executed, as, wait for it, a war criminal.

Am I missing something?

I’m as mad as hell about all this.

I’ll give you my ha’penny worth about Ford and what the New Year has in store in a mo’.

BTW, GNMNUK, Bush doesn’t give a monkey’s about the rights of unborn babies, or for any one else for that matter.

It’s just about getting the votes of the idiot Christian right.

If Bush is a genuine Christian, then I’m Monica Lewinski.

And I’m speaking as a Christian.

I’ve just read the news on the CBS website.

By all accounts he died bravely. A darn sight more bravely than those evil creeps Blair will die when, or if, justice ever catches up with them. They’ll die soiling themselves.

It completely escaped comment in my parents' household this morning, and my father's someone who followws the news on CEEFAX religiously.

I had to choke back a tear when I read it. Not because I liked Saddam. He was a nasty piece of work. But it’s so grotesquely unfair that he pays for his crimes and others can just rewrite history.

A tale of three (actually four) exiles!

I've been slowly reading (for the 3rd time), Isabel Allende's House of the Spirits, and I've been reading the fictionalised, but true to history account of the coup and imposition of martial law in Chile.

Page after page of unrelenting horror.

What sticks out is that people thought that a coup couldn't happen here, could it.

And, then when it happened, they were in denial.

The right which had sanctioned it, expected the generals to hand power back to Parliament once they had sorted out the mess Allende was supposed to have got the country into, a mess orchestrated by the CIA and ITT.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Funny that three of my favourite books, all of which fall into the category of one or other kinds of magic realism, are written against the background of a coup or foreign invasion.
Milan Kundera's the unbearable Lightness of Being.
I read two essays by Milan Kundera on the Jewish contribution of the culture of Mitteleuropa (Mahler, Kafka), and how, after the annihilation of the Jews partitioning of Europe at Yalta, Central Europe ceased to exist and pan-slavism was imposed, and an extract from this book in the literary magazine, granta, in a hotel room in Arrezzo, one weekend back in 1985.
Because there was a long queue for the only copy of the English translation of this book when it came out later that year, I decided to buy it in Spanish and read it on the long trainride through the ever-changing landscape (greenery, desert, mountains) between the Basque country where I was living at the time and Madrid.
I had already begun to speak falteringly, and read, Spanish, but found the thick accent of Las Arenas very difficult to understand.
When I got to Madrid, I found I could speak Spanish better, either that, or the Madrilenos speak Spanish much more clearly.
I managed to book a hotel room without trouble at the station, and awoke the following morning feeling that I could speak a whole new language!
The second book is Isaac Bashevis Singer’s The Slave, about a Jew living in Poland in the aftermath of Bogdan Chmielnizki’s Cossack incursions into Poland in the seventeenth century.
And the third, Isabel Allende’s The House of the Spirits.
Which brings me to the main point of this comment.
If the Chilean middle-classes thought that a coup could not possibly happen in Chile, are we any wiser?
Of, course it couldn’t happen here, could it?
Could it?
A happy new year, everybody!
T,
History gets revised as history is being made, especially in time of war, let alone after the war is over and the victors can write what they like. As Churchill said, "The first casualty of war is truth".
You can bet your bottom dollar that if truth is indeed the first casualty of war, then by the time that war nears it's end, truth is in a pretty bad way!
A classical example of how histiry is revised is the way we were told, then and now, that we had to srop the bomb on Japan because they refused to surrender.
As Gore Vidal argues, on the basis of several published books with citations, the Japanese had been willing to surrender on the condition that they retained their emperor, and had been contacting the US admin through the embassies of neutral countries.
The US insisted on unconditional surrender and dropped the bomb, as Vidal says, to frighten the Russians.
And as it happened, McArthur decided to retain the emperor anyway.
As Voltaire said, "History is a lie that is generally agreed upon!" Wise words indeed!
Churchill also said that truth was so precious it had to be rationed which, frankly, I find deeply sinister.
