WASHINGTON - The Federal Reserve is taking new steps to ease the credit crises, including increasing the amount of money it will auction to banks this month to $100 billion.
The Federal Reserve says it will make two moves to increase liquidity in the credit markets. First, it will increase the size of its March 10 and 24 auctions to banks to $50 billion each. The auctions had been set for $30 billion apiece. Fed officials say they are prepared to move to even larger amounts at future auctions if necessary.
The Fed also says that, starting Friday, it will begin a series of repurchase transactions expected to reach $100 billion.

Prosecutors can use at trial admissions made by a deputy U.S. marshal who is charged with leaking that an Outfit figure was secretly cooperating in a probe of decades-old mob murders, a federal judge ruled Friday.
U.S. District Senior Judge John Grady found that U.S. Atty. Patrick Fitzgerald acted properly during the 2006 interrogation of the deputy marshal, John Ambrose.
Ambrose's lawyer, Francis Lipuma, sought to have the admissions thrown out, arguing Fitzgerald and Robert Grant, Chicago's top FBI official, should have advised Ambrose of his legal rights.
The judge's ruling hinged on whether Ambrose was under arrest when he was confronted at FBI headquarters in Chicago. Fitzgerald testified in court that he specifically told Ambrose he was not under arrest.
Fitzgerald's "testimony has been unflagging on this subject," Grady said in ruling from the bench. "I believe his testimony. I find it credible."
Ambrose has pleaded not guilty to charges he leaked that mobster Nicholas Calabrese was in the Witness Security Program and cooperating with the FBI. The information ended up in the hands of Outfit figures under investigation by federal authorities.
Calabrese's testimony last summer was critical to the conviction of his brother, Frank Calabrese Sr., and three other reputed Outfit figures in connection with 18 gangland slayings from decades earlier. Prosecutors say his cooperation had been a closely guarded secret when Ambrose outed him.
Lipuma said afterward that he was disappointed in Grady's ruling but prepared to rebut the prosecution's claims at trial.
Fitzgerald's "testimony has been unflagging on this subject," Grady said in ruling from the bench. "I believe his testimony. I find it credible."
One would hope that Fitzgerald would not lie or cover up for anyone while under oath.

Arresting and romancing don't mix.
That was one of the conclusions of a federal judge Friday as he rejected a request from a deputy U.S. marshal who wanted his statements to investigators kept out of his upcoming trial on charges he leaked secrets to the Chicago Outfit.
Deputy U.S. Marshal John Ambrose, once a rising star but now suspended without pay, said he was coerced into making statements about allegedly leaking information concerning a witness he was guarding, mob hit man turned federal witness Nicholas Calabrese.
Prosecutors argued they were interested in getting Ambrose to cooperate -- in "romancing" him, as U.S. District Judge John Grady characterized it. Prosecutors said authorities didn't wind up arresting Ambrose during a meeting in September 1996 with U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald and FBI Special Agent in Charge Robert Grant.
Fitzgerald and Grant wanted to pitch Ambrose to cooperate. They thought he leaked the information on Calabrese but didn't know how imprisoned mob boss James Marcello learned of it. They wanted Ambrose to fill in the blanks.
Fitzgerald testified at the court hearing that he told Ambrose at the start of the 2006 meeting he wasn't under arrest. Grant backed up Fitzgerald's testimony.
Ambrose, though, told the judge Fitzgerald never mentioned he wasn't under arrest -- a key omission.
Ambrose argued that whatever he told Fitzgerald and Grant in the meeting shouldn't be allowed in at trial because he was coerced.
But the judge didn't buy it.
"If you're going to romance him, arresting him is inconsistent with romancing -- or pitching him -- as they put it in testimony," Grady said.
Ambrose's attorney, Francis Lipuma, said Ambrose was "disappointed" by the judge's ruling but still planned on going to trial.
The U.S. attorney's office had no comment on the win for prosecutors Markus Funk and Diane MacArthur.

I've been saying there is something wrong with the water for years now.

If what my colleagues in Texas tell me is true, "Dr. Phil" is the nation's most prominent mental health professional to benefit from both his failure to comply with licensure law and abuse of his profession's ethical codes. He has found a way to use his disrespect of both his profession and the laws of his government as a marital aid with subsequent profit.
As fellow federal prosecutors, this is one time the most powerful U.S. prosecutor in the nation should not only follow the law, he should enforce it as well. It would serve all Americans if the U.S. Atty. for the Northern District of Illinois indicted Francis Cardinal George for following the knowing violations of Pope Benedict XVI at a time both could appear in court.

Will the next President be any better? That would depend on a lot of things. Will he be able to understand the science behind these weapons? Will he be good enough to volunteer to feel the torture behind them and connect how these weapons can be used on his own families and friends by other countries, who, of course, are developing the same weapons--which they would not want to ban once they have succeeded. Is that future US President strong and brave enough to correct the horrors that our country did to our own people and to other countries? Will he be able to instill goodwill by agreeing to give "repatriation" for the victims and victim nations?
We need to start thinking now on how to prevent the other countries from punishing us like they had punished Germany after World War I. If, and trust me--they already know---if they know about the atrocities of these military exercises--they will definitely get together secretly (yes, even in space--why you think that's laughable? Remember that Churchill and President Roosevelt met secretly in a ship. Now spaceships are available, they can meet secretly in space to discuss these horrific abuses of the United States. Why in space ships? So that advance technology cannot earsdrop. Now, back to what I was talking about: it is necessary to start "admitting" that the US and it's allies were using these weapons (INCLUDING WEATHER MODIFICATIONS), while we still have the leverage.
And what is the leverage? The weapons themselves. These weapons, if used properly without abuses, can be wonderful medical and private security instruments---Again, the uses has to be with the consent of every individual who wants to use it help themselves and families.
