I explored my going to law school. I wanted some special consideration so that's how I got the following information.
At Northwestern Law School, chatting with the law profs, I found out that James R. Thompson the attorney who is now George Ryan's lawyer, graduated from NU law school in the '50's.
James R. Thompson got his law degree in a special way that's been done away with.
Here's the story the old NU profs told me.
James R. Thompson was a teenager who met NU law prof and criminologist Fred Inbau. How they met has been whispered about and snickered about. It is rumored they met in what was called (in the 50's) a 'tea room' aka men't public restroom in a park/county forest preserve.
[Republican men seem to treat going to pee like speed-dating.]
Anyway, Inbau 'mentored' the young, tall and handsome teenager, James R. Thompson and that 'mentoring' and a special project was why Thompson was awarded an NU law degree.
Students who graduated with Thompson say they don't recall seeing Thompson in class and he's big and tall, kinda hard to miss.
That special project was lobbying legislators to agree to vote for for changes in the laws regarding sex crimes. Thompson, along with Abner Mikva, sat on Judge Austin's Sex Crimes Committee in the 50's.
Thompson also had another Judge, a straight man, whose name escapes me, who helped him along his career path as State's Attorney.
Anyway, Thompson has alot of lawyers and judges genuflecting to him, both here in Illinois and nationally, because of Thompson's work in changing the sodomy law in Illinois.
Illinois changes prompted national changes. Thompson is probably the most influentual back-door, gay advocate.
In the Inbau papers I found correspondence between Inbau and 4 current Supremes,. Also some correspondence with Thompson.
I wonder if Thompson has a relationship with any of the Supremes that might be a conflict of interest: the Ryan case might go before the Supreme Court.
I wonder if either Illinois Governor Blagojevich or President
Bush can at the last minute pardon George Ryan.

I don't agree with the sentencing of Ryan to prison. He's just going to sit around and bond with other criminals who all say the same thing to each other.

[More background: I was asked to REP one of the death-row guys, Reverend Darby. He wanted me to be his publicist. After a few meetings, I had to respectfully decline. I explained to the media that for personal reasons, I could not work with former death row inmate, now Reverend, Darby. Darby said that he was not quilty of the crime, murder, that sent him to death row. Darby said he was a pimp and drug-dealer who did not treat women with respect. But that he was now a changed man, after spending 19 years on death row. He had already gotten a huge amount of money through NU's lawyers, but (IMHO) Darby was greedy and was going back for more money.]
I know Ryan and his cronies are vindictive. Prison will only reinforce Ryan's sefl-rightous attitude and give him time to plan political payback.
I would sentence Ryan to work in Cook County Hospital's trauma and burn units, giving physical care. I want Ryan to see human suffering up-close and personal.
Restorative Justice.
Ryan can't bring back the Willis children, but he can help heal others.
I would have Ryan work, light duty, 40 hours a week, for the rest of his life.
At the end of a wearying day in the intensive care units, Ryan
could go home to his posh near-north apartment and talk politics & governing.

You are probably right about Ryan caring and working in the trauma units.
I'm glad that you are sharing what you have found, people deserve better than the actions of these fools.
Fitz is a study in contrasts, more so than is the norm.
He’s a gentle soul who supports the death penalty, and is an active party to its application.
He’s a New Yorker by birth but a Midwesterner by heart.
He’s a relentless crimefighter who let one of the biggest criminals in the history of our country, Ali Mohammed, run free. Peter Lance can be an ass but, on this point, he’s right. The SDNY rationalizes this horrible mistake by morbid math: 3000+ people died on 9/11 but thousands more deaths were averted by DOJ efforts. I don’t imagine that brings much solace to the families of the people who did die.
Fitz has dated, and been dismissive of, bright, accomplished women – but became engaged to someone whose bio Randall is spinning with an attractive, and inaccurate, soundbite (which the WaPo women bought hook-line-sinker as hoped – Randall is a typical flack in this regard). Jenni’s divorce is not as benign as they want us to believe. The only thing that is heart-tugging about the situation is her own father dumped her counselor-mother for a younger woman. Maybe heartache does get passed down. On this point, both Comey’s slightly older wife and Fitz’s psychiatrist-brother-in-law have interesting perspectives on Fitz’s motivations (beyond the stereotypical male drives). But even Dave Kelley married someone with competitive credentials. Jenni doesn’t even challenge him during runs – some would say “smart girl” but it still says something unfortunate.
He continues to defend and support the Patriot Act in a way that STILL has not been fully addressed.
He has chipped away at Chicagoland corruption while destroying innocent lives, a fact he has only recently begun to address (most recently at the Better Gov’t shindig).
The Armitage-River Shannon-Cleveland “signs” – even the Scullen/Grant connection – are interesting, but coincidences aren’t always indicators.

The investigation is still in progress. The Chicago cops chain-of-command would ultimately report to the Mayor of Chicaqo.

Ryan and his lawyer Thompson, are former Illinois Governors. I don't know what authority or influence they could have had over police, who are municiple employees.

Hero? It's a fair guess that's an assessment that makes Fitz equally uncomfortable. He's a civil servant. That's all that can be expected of him. Higher expectations have led to the backlash.

Illinois history, young Thompson prosecuted Governor Kerner for corruption. Now aged Thompson [himself a former Governor] is defending Ryan convicted of corruption.
