Crime Does Not Pay...

7 years and $6.6 million
A Crete man was sentenced to 7 years in prison Wednesday and ordered to pay for embezzling and defrauding pension and welfare benefit plans of more than $6.9 million and paying graft to union officials.

Michael Linder, 61, who was president of Matteson-based Joseph/Anthony and Associates Inc., was ordered by U.S. District Judge Philip Reinhard in Rockford to serve 3 years of post-prison supervision and pay nearly $6.6 million to the plans he defrauded.

In 2004, Linder pleaded guilty to graft charges for giving two union pension officials Harley-Davidson motorcycles valued at more than $19,000 each, said U.S. Atty. Patrick J. Fitzgerald, whose office prosecuted Linder. <

Way to go, Mr. Fitzgerald and staff. Thanks for all your hard work. That's what happens when union officials forgot to just say no to graft. I wonder how much the union officials knew about the raiding of the pension by the administrators.

Good Morning Fitzie and Justice Bloggers...

As much as I love to visit Chicago...I think that city keeps our "dashingly handsome" Very Special Prosecutor a little too busy. But then if he was only stationed in DC, he'd be drowning in the graft too!

Too much graft and not enough Fitzies to go around.

Sorry, I still haven't figured out to shorten the thing. But Mr. Fitz, isn't this against the law and how does Bush keep getting away with this crap?

"WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A statement by President George W. Bush issued in connection with the just-signed U.S.-India civil nuclear cooperation law has raised concerns that Bush may try to circumvent some of Congress' intentions, lawmakers and analysts say.

The statement, clarifying Bush's views on law and policy, was issued after he signed new legislation on Monday permitting U.S. sales of nuclear fuel and reactors to India for the first time in 30 years."

Hi GEF!

More news....Melanie is in doo doo with Judge Reggie:

"A federal judge strongly admonished an attorney for former ambassador Joseph Wilson for her appearance yesterday on MSNBC's program "Hardball" where she predicted a jury can find I Lewis "Scooter" Libby guilty of making false statements.

U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton writes in an opinion today, "the Court would not tolerate this case being tried in the media."

Melanie Sloan, who is representing Wilson and his wife Valerie Plame in a civil suit against Libby, was asked by Chris Matthews if she thought Libby could still found guilty of perjury and obstruction charges - in the upcoming CIA/Leak trial - even though he may not have been the first person to reveal Plame's name."

It's Thursday!

I got to see the video on Hardball of Melanie Sloan. She is a great job and stuck to her guns with Tweety. I just can't stand Tweety. He was trying every which way to justify Cheney's involvement in the civil case and kept questioning to why Cheney would punish Wilson, blah, blah, blah... I think the Tweety as scared as you know what since he was one of the reporters that given Plame's name...

Yes, I did hear that there will no news coverage of Chneey being on the stand. I think that is the right thing to do. It will be a news frenzy...But, best believe from looking at Tweety's face, he knows that the CREW mean serious business...

O.k. I had to pass this along because I watched PBS last night with the Gerbil. And I found last night's transcript. Here is an excerpt of the transcript of the flip flop and cannabis President:

JOURNALIST: Mr. President, less than two months ago, at the end of one of the bloodiest months in the war, you said, "Absolutely we're winning." Yesterday, you said, "We're not winning. We're not losing." Why did you drop your confident assertion about winning?

THE GERBIL: My comments -- the first comment was done in this spirit. I believe that we're going to win. I believe that -- and, by the way, if I didn't think that, I wouldn't have our troops there. That's what you've got to know.
We're going to succeed. My comments yesterday reflected the fact that we're not succeeding nearly as fast as I wanted when I said at the time and that conditions are tough in Iraq, particularly in Baghdad. And so we're conducting a review to make sure that our strategy helps us achieve that which I'm pretty confident we can do, and that is have a country which can govern itself, sustain itself, and defend itself.
When I speak -- like right now, for example -- I'm speaking to the American people, of course, and I want them to know that I know how tough it is, but I also want them to know that I'm going to work with the military and the political leaders to develop a plan that will help us achieve the objective.

And I want the enemy to understand that this is a tough task, but they can't run us out of the Middle East, that they can't intimidate America. They think they can. They think it's just a matter of time before America grows weary and leaves, abandons the people of Iraq, for example, and that's not going to happen.
I'm not going to speculate out loud about what I'm going to tell the nation, when I'm prepared to do so, about the way forward. I will tell you we're looking at all options. And one of those options, of course, is increasing more troops.
But in order to do so, there must be a specific mission that can be accomplished with more troops, and that's precisely what our commanders have said, as well as people who know a lot about military operations.
I'm often asked about public opinion. Of course I want public opinion to support the efforts. I understand that. But, Jim, I also understand the consequences of failure.

What is the deal on this, SPB?

Teak,

I had answered that last night.
O.k. First of all, Libby's defense team subpoenaed Wilson on Dec. 13. According to Libby's attorney, William Jeffress, the subpoena served as "precautionary" and that they have no intentions to have Wilson to testify. Of course, Ms. Sloan is have the subpoena squash. Now, why did Libby have Wilson subpoenaed? Of course, the defense attorneys have a right to subpoena anyone as long as it is relevant to Libby's defense only. And since Libby is charged with perjury, Wilson serves no purpose in testifying. That is what Ms. Sloan outlined in his filings to the court yesterday. The defense knows that.. But, there are speculation that because the civil case is closer to the criminal case that Wilson may be use for personal gain in the civil lawsuit. Whatever the case, Walton told the court that Wilson played a minor role in Libby trial. This was a very bad move on the defense side. If Libby was charged with a WH conspiracy to punish Wilson and not perjury, then Wilson becomes a central figure in that case and would have to testify... Ms. Sloan and Libby's attorneys will present arguments a few days before Libby trial in January. Rest assured, Judge Walton will squash the subpoena...

I just read that Walton scolded Ms. Sloan for her interview on Hardball.. Well, this trial has been tried in the public's eye since day one. So, were the case of O.J. Simpson, Robert Blake, Michael Jackson, and so on... If Walton wants a fair trial as he wants, then everyone should be under a gag order. Also, the trial should be closed to the public if that's what he wants. But, this case is on the lips of the public for talking..But, then again, Walton has to remember that our own President leaked confidential NIE information to the public.. So, this case is not much of privacy anymore...
