Defrosting Rep. Jefferson...

Exec. Gets 7 Years for Congressman Bribe

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) -- A Kentucky businessman who admitted paying more than $400,000 in bribes to a Louisiana congressman was sentenced Friday to more than seven years in prison.

Vernon Jackson, 54, of Louisville, is a key figure in the federal investigation of Rep. William Jefferson, D-La. The chief executive of the telecommunications firm iGate Inc. said he paid the bribes to gain the congressman's help in obtaining business deals in Africa.

The bribes paid by Jackson, including stocks and cash paid to a company controlled by Jefferson's family, had a value of $400,000 to $1 million, according to court records.

The congressman has not been charged but court records allege the FBI caught Jefferson on videotape taking a $100,000 cash bribe from an FBI informant who agreed to have her conversations with the congressman taped. Most of that money later turned up in a freezer in Jefferson's home. <more>

Until I am blue in the face...just say "No, thank you!" to graft.

President Bush's support proved insufficient to push a bill authorizing his warrantless wiretapping program through the Senate Judiciary Committee Thursday.

Sen. Arlen Specter, the committee's chairman, said the bill stalled because of election-year obstructionism.

"We have seen the incipient stage of filibuster by amendment," the Pennsylvania Republican testily declared as he called off a vote to move his bill to the Senate floor. "Filibuster by speech, filibuster by amendment. Obstructionism."

The target of his ire was Sen. Russell Feingold, D-Wis., who spoke against the bill for about a quarter of the panel's two-hour meeting and offered four amendments. Feingold, a possible presidential candidate, said Specter's bill would give the White House too much power to eavesdrop without a warrant in some circumstances.

********

Way to go, Sen. Feingold! The only deserving to run for Prez. Well, maybe Mr. Fitz too.

Do states have to buy their national guard equipment or does it come out of the DOD's billions they are getting?

I read that most of the states' equipment needs replaced from being used in Iraq. A lot of stuff is broken down over there now, is this true?

There are literally thousands of "field officers" hell bend on boosting the local economies there (buying, of course, souvenirs on "culture tours" - when they are not busy looking for group members gone astray).

How many mass graves do you think there are in Iraq now? As many as Bush said there were pre-MISSION ACCOMPLISHED?? And when the U.S. lets a terrorist arms dealer fly weapons into Iraq, do you not think he would supply both sides?

Must get those bases built, need more money please---more wars, more killing, more insanity. Our sons and daughters pay the price, innocent people pay the price for their "liberation" but who benefits?

The Scholastic Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Fellows program introduces college students to the publishing world through an intensive internship that takes place at Scholastic headquarters in New York City. The program is part of the company’s ongoing commitment to promote diversity in the publishing industry.

Open to current college students and graduating college seniors, the Fellows program provides students with hands-on experience with the company’s Trade Publishing division. Fellows gain exposure to various aspects of the business, including the areas of editorial, design, marketing, and promotion. In addition to the work experience, Fellows are immersed in a rigorous pre-professional curriculum specifically designed to hone business leadership skills. Fellows are assigned a corporate mentor for work management and professional coaching.

Oh, the tangled webs. The Weekly Reader gave it away in 2004.

Well...I guess this sad commentary about corporate government, reminds us that the scope of corruption knows no bounds. Here is congressman William Jefferson, Democrat-La, using his position to promote the business of his friend, and accepting large amounts of money to do so. "We The People" must be informed about our local leaders, and replace corrupted office holders with honest and legitimate government.
