and you will be lucky if you only need OxyContin.

U.S. Attorney Became Target After Rebuffing Justice Dept.

The night before the government secured a guilty plea from the manufacturer of the addictive painkiller OxyContin, a senior Justice Department official called the U.S. attorney handling the case and, at the behest of an executive for the drugmaker, urged him to slow down, the prosecutor told the Senate Judiciary Committee yesterday.

John L. Brownlee, the U.S. attorney in Roanoke, testified that he was at home the evening of Oct. 24 when he received the call on his cellphone from Michael J. Elston, then chief of staff to the deputy attorney general and one of the Justice aides involved in the removal of nine U.S. attorneys last year. <more>

Rick Renzi (R-Ariz.) called the office of Arizona's U.S. attorney about six weeks before the prosecutor was fired, inquiring about a federal probe into the congressman's role in a land deal that benefited a former business partner and political patron." ... "The former U.S. attorney, Paul K. Charlton, told House investigators this week that his office alerted the Justice Department's headquarters about the call from Renzi's chief of staff, Brian Murray, because he considered it potentially improper, according to congressional sources who spoke about the probe on the condition of anonymity. Justice rules require prosecutors to report contacts from members of Congress seeking information about investigations." ... "The incident means that Charlton was the third of eight U.S. attorneys forced to resign last year who had reported to Justice officials that Republican members of Congress or their staffs made inappropriate overtures to their offices about politically sensitive investigations they were supervising."

"Paul K. Charlton, who was the U.S. attorney in Phoenix [Airzona], said that he, too, received a call that day in which Elston offered "a quid pro quo agreement: my silence in exchange for the attorney general's."

WASHINGTON -- Oregonians called Peter DeFazio's office, worried there was a conspiracy buried in the classified portion of a White House plan for operating the government after a terrorist attack.
As a member of the U.S. House on the Homeland Security Committee, DeFazio, D-Ore., is permitted to enter a secure "bubbleroom" in the Capitol and examine classified material. So he asked the White House to see the secret documents.
On Wednesday, DeFazio got his answer: DENIED.

Canada Travel Request Could Hit Snag At Conrad Black Hearing Today

Black is in an unusual situation as a convicted felon facing a possibly long prison sentence in U.S. jails. Born in Montreal, he renounced his Canadian citizenship in 2000 in order to accept a peerage in Britain. In the months before his trial, Black, who has the title Lord Black of Crossharbour, spent most of his time at his mansion in Toronto, staying in Canada on a temporary residence permit.

His Canadian lawyer, Edward Greenspan, told St. Eve that if Black were in Canada and U.S. prosecutors wanted him returned to Chicago, they would need only make one phone call. The remark caused Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Sussman, who led the prosecution against Black, to scoff, "The notion that with one phone call to Canada I could get anything other than pizza is ridiculous,"

"Nearly 40 years ago that old warhorse for the protection of the American Public from spoiled and poisonous food and drugs (the late Dr. Harvey W. Wiley) had a fine law enacted for this purpose. But the Drug Trust got its hooks into the government bureau which was charged with enforcing the law soon after Dr. Wiley's death.
This Bureau — now known as the Food & Drug Administration — is used primarily for the perversion of justice by "cracking down" on all who endanger the profits of the Drug Trust. The Bureau occasionally prosecutes, on its own initiative, smalltime opportunists who should be prosecuted. Thus in a few small cases the Bureau does good work."

Bridge Falls Into Mississippi River - Forbes.com

"MINNEAPOLIS -

The entire span of an interstate bridge over the Mississippi River collapsed during evening rush hour Wednesday, sending vehicles, tons of concrete and twisted metal crashing into the water.

The Interstate 35W bridge, which spans between Minneapolis and St. Paul, was under construction when it broke into several huge sections.

It was not clear how many people were injured. A burning truck and a school bus clung to one slanted slab, while at least eight cars and a truck were submerged in the river.

The bus had just crossed the bridge before it crumpled into pieces, and broadcast reports indicated the children on the bus exited out the back door."

Women Are Half of All Bloggers—But Media Aren’t Noticing

If you get your news from, well, the news media, you can be forgiven if you didn’t know that nearly 800 women gathered in Chicago last weekend for the third annual convention of BlogHer, an online community of more than 13,000 blogging women diverse in age, ethnicity and political persuasion. According to a search of the Nexis news database, only three Chicago newspapers covered the conference, as if this national assemblage of women writers and videographers were simply a local story. Not one national network or cable news broadcast deigned to mention it.

Compare that to the glut of coverage bestowed on YearlyKos, a conference for left-leaning bloggers made popular by the blustering A-list boys of the “netroots.”

You see this Brad Blog, Cannonfire, KOS? Yes I know, I was invited... (they just want more info and my lips are sealed;)

Senator Specter has once again save the Republican party with another magic trick. He used the magic bullet that he said traveled in so many turns/ins/outs/back/forth no one could keep up with what he said. Yes this was to explain how one bullet killed and injured JFK and others. That bullet even when up and over the car chair turned back around and went under the seat. Now he never did explain how several bullets were found in the car and one in Kennedy's head. But the American people believe the honest lawyer from Pennsylvania. Oh yes he spoke up about the murder of JFK but forgot to mention that Johnson was in on the assassination plot. Now Specter wants us to believe that you can lie under oath but it's a wily lie so it's not really a lie that Gonzales has been telling. You see he say it's the truth but it's a wily lie and that an Attorney General can do that. Look for future lawyers handling criminal cases use that defense for their clients. Specter did a good job at lying from two side of his mouth. Let's hope he's good enough in him to continue to cover up the criminal acts of his fellow Republicans.
