Libby Becomes Inmate No. 28301-016

For years he was known as chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney and assistant to President Bush. On Wednesday, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby became federal inmate No. 28301-016.

Libby, who was convicted in March of lying and obstructing an investigation into the leak of a CIA operative's identity, faces 2 1/2 years in prison.

The assignment of an inmate number by the U.S. Bureau of Prisons represents another step on the road to prison. Inmate numbers stay with prisoners even after their release.

Libby, however, is hoping that an appeals court will intervene and put the sentence on hold before he is ordered to surrender.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit has not indicated how quickly it will rule. Lawyers in the case said Libby had not yet been assigned to a prison or given a date to surrender.

Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald opposes Libby's bid to delay his prison term. He says Libby does not have a good chance of having his conviction overturned and should begin serving prison time immediately.

Libby's friends have asked President Bush to step in and pardon him, a request that Bush has sidestepped while the legal case drags on.

Libby, 56, is the only person charged in the leak scandal, which erupted after CIA operative Valerie Plame's identity was revealed in a 2003 syndicated newspaper column. Libby was not the source for that leak and neither of the two Bush administration officials who provided the information were ever charged.

When confronted by prosecutors and FBI agents, however, Libby lied about how he learned about Plame and whom he told, a jury found. He is the highest-ranking White House official sentenced to prison since the Iran-Contra scandal in the 1980s.

The Bureau of Prisons does not say where its inmates will serve until they begin their sentence. Normally, prisoners are assigned to facilities within 200 miles of home. As a nonviolent, first-time offender, Libby likely will be placed in a minimum security prison camp.

Libby is a true loyal Republican to given even his life for his boss. President Cheney isn't concerned about Libby. Cheney has to complete the mission he started in 2000. Yes it's more important to dismantle Civil Rights, Woman's Rights and Voting Rights then deal with Libby. Gonzales can only do as he's ordered by Karl Rove. Karl is to busy as he has to complete the one party system. I always wondered by the Republicans refused to make hanging a crime now I know.

Black Watch-
The defense, however, was not united in its portrayal of the testimony of F. David Radler, the only former Hollinger senior executive who pleaded guilty. He agreed to testify for the government in exchange for the promise of a reduced sentence of 29 months.

Black's lawyers told the jurors not to believe a word of Radler's testimony, calling him a chronic liar. But the lawyer for co-defendant Peter Atkinson, former executive vice president, held up Radler's testimony as proof that his client did not participate in the alleged scheme.

The inconsistency could work against the defendants when the jury deliberates, courtroom observers said.

Salon: Why write things down when you can just trust White House officials to tell the truth?

But we paraphrase. Here are the words the senior administration official actually said:

"As far as the debate goes, often cited is that a transcript is not wanted because otherwise there would be a perjury trap. And, candidly, as everyone has discussed, misleading Congress is misleading Congress, whether it's under oath or not. And so a transcript may be convenient, but there's no intention to try to avoid telling the truth."

2 Arrested In Case Of Missing British Girl, Spanish Police Detain Italian Man And Portuguese Woman In Case Of Madeleine McCann - CBS News

Hopefully this child will be found as safe as possible. (doubtful, robbing a child of her parents) The rich need to pay attention to every child that goes missing. The law needs to look for every young adult that goes missing that is out of character for them. Looking in the eyes of any missing child or youth, regardless of race, culture, class or religion should not make a difference.

Be careful of those who blame stores for not having cameras installed everywhere and anywhere or saying children should be "chipped" like animals. Evidence still can disappear behind national security while our freedoms disappear.

Everyone knows that children should not be harmed, manipulated, "groomed", abused, molested, stolen, etc. or else they would step forward in the public forum. Break the cycle of cowardly control of children and sexual predators. Start at the very top.

Claiming Exec Priv: Target And Remove U.S. Attorneys

(Paul)Clement reviewed the documents that the Congress subpoenaed. In his letter, Clement reveals what investigators have suspected from the very beginning — that the White House was intimately involved in the attorney scandal.

And now, he’s the guy who gets to tell the President that he doesn’t have to turn over what might amount to evidence of obstruction of justice in the Foggo and Wilkes case, among others.

Clement’s letter reveals the White House was deeply involved in selectively targeting attorneys for removal. These documents presumably reveal the motives of the White House in purging the U.S. attorneys. Now Clement is working to ensure those documents never become public.

Bush Faces `No-Win' Pressures to Pardon Convicted Cheney Aide

June 29 (Bloomberg) -- President George W. Bush is likely to pay a political price if he decides to pardon convicted vice presidential aide Lewis ``Scooter'' Libby -- or if he decides not to pardon him.

With the start of Libby's 2 1/2-year prison term looming, Republican stalwarts who are the president's last source of political support may revolt unless he quickly pardons the former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney. If Bush does act, he would violate Justice Department guidelines, alienate much of the public and run the risk of cover-up charges.

``This is a no-win situation for Bush,'' said David Gergen, who advised Presidents Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton.

Interesting comments Just Say No to These Dudes
I watched both Dems/Rep candidates and if your right the only thing left to do is keep Bush/Cheney in office for another 8 years. It will be interesting as the time goes by to see the media and Americans put down all the Dems that are running for President. Now McCain was promised the White House after he gave his support to Bush. As Karl Rove continues his plan on the one party system your comments will likely help that afford. Now all the Republicans have to do is stop minorities from voting and get the Christian Right to believe God said to put a Republican back in office. Yes Rudy has heard from God I guess by email and told him He want Rudy to be President. Mitt is getting calls from God too. Now if the American people will buy the lie for the third time we will see another corrupt Republican in office. Yes we can stay the course in Iraq as hundreds of soldiers die each month. Now with the current Bush/Cheney plan we have 160,000 soldiers at the rate their being killed all should be dead within 10 years just as General Pace said they should stay. That should make things better for the Middle East.

From Wapo-
The big question right now among Republicans is how to remove Vice President Cheney from office. Even before this week's blockbuster series in The Post, discontent in Republican ranks was rising.

As the reputed architect of the war in Iraq, Cheney is viewed as toxic, and as the administration's leading proponent of an attack on Iran, he is seen as dangerous. As long as he remains vice president, according to this thinking, he has the potential to drag down every member of the party -- including the presidential nominee -- in next year's elections.

A jury analyst and consultant, Wendy Grossman of Trial Partners Inc., noted the jury includes more women than men and said her firm's analysis has found women deciding white collar criminal cases are more likely to convict.
