Folks,

The Enron case is coming down to the homestretch.. and more like one leg to stand on for the defense... From WSJ:

Enron Week 15: The Homestretch

The Enron trial’s headed into the homestretch this morning with the force of Barbaro. (Lame Kentucky Derby reference, we know, but we had to weave it in somehow.) After presenting a flurry of witnesses this morning, both sides have rested. Judge Lake will give lawyers the week to prepare closing arguments, which won’t begin until Monday.

"The defense’s 29th and final witness was Ed Young, a popular Houston minister. Speaking of Lay, Young reportedly said, “I believe he loves God, I believe he works hard and I believe he’s a man who keeps his word.” On cross, prosecutor Cliff Stricklin told Young he had taken a religion course in college taught by one of Young’s sons. Joking that Young’s son became a minister while he became a lawyer, Stricklin said, “You can draw your own conclusions from that.” Retorted Young: “I already have.”

•The defense called Marge Nadasky, a longtime Enron employee who handled the company’s business dealings with Photofete, the now famous dot-com that both Skilling and Lay invested in without informing the board. Nadasky said Enron’s cancelled its contract with Photofete, which had done nearly $500,000 in business with the energy giant, in September 2001. She testified that she had no knowledge of Skilling’s ties to Photofete (he dated its founder, Jennifer Binder) or of a personal investment by Ken Lay in Photofete. On cross she acknowledged had she known these facts they would’ve caused her concern."

And looks Jeb Bush doesn't have anything positive to say about Fitz' buddy, Katherine Harris. Her friends are bailing out on her!:

Gov. Bush Doubts Harris Can Win Sen. Seat
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Gov.

"Jeb Bush said Monday that U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris (news, bio, voting record) has dropped so low in public opinion polls she cannot beat Democratic U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson (news, bio, voting record) in November

“I just don't think she can win," Bush said at the Capitol in his strongest statement yet about his fellow Republican's struggling campaign."

And there you go, folks! That's what friends are for!!!

More on Hookergate:

Hayden Aide Assisted in Illegal MZM Donation Scam

"I wrote earlier that the MZM employee who worked for Michael Hayden at the NSA "has not been implicated in the growing scandal around Wade's illegal activities."
That's not entirely accurate.
Around the same time King is said to have worked for the White House's new pick to be CIA chief, he was helping former MZM chief Mitchell Wade disguise thousands of dollars in illegal "straw contributions" to Rep. Katherine Harris (R-FL), a review of government documents appears to show.
Along with Wade's infamous $2800 dinner with Harris, those contributions appear to have been part of an effort to convince the lawmaker to push for an MZM-run Defense facility in her district. (Harris tried, but missed the deadline.)

The 'straw contribution' scam is a simple (and illegal) end run around campaign funding rules, which limit donations from individuals. Rather than cutting one huge check from yourself to your lawmaker of choice, you get a bunch of people to write smaller checks to the lawmaker, reimburse those folks for their "contributions," and then personally hand the bundle of checks to your candidate.
In early 2004, records show King helped Wade run this scam by writing four $2000 checks from himself and his wife to Rep. Katherine Harris (R-FL), in exchange for an immediate cash reimbursement.
According to Wade's plea agreement, Wade and one of his aides essentially walked around MZM offices with bundles of money, reimbursing on-the-spot MZM employees -- including King, records indicate -- who wrote checks to Rep. Katherine Harris.
In the agreement, Wade identified 16 illegal "straw contributions" from MZM employees that hid the size of his "contribution" to Harris. Matched against campaign donation records at opensecrets.org, it appears King's four checks are included in that number.
Last summer, MZM was bought by private investors and renamed Athena Innovative Solutions. Wade left the company, and is now cooperating with federal prosecutors in an effort to minimize his stay in prison. King took over the reins at MZM, where he is now president. The company has not returned our call."

Bush tells German paper he caught the largest fresh-water perch in world history
by John in DC - 5/08/2006 12:14:00 PM

Bush told the following to a German newspaper yesterday:
Bush told weekly Bild am Sonntag when asked about his high point since becoming president in January 2001.

"I would say the best moment of all was when I caught a 7.5 pound perch in my lake."
The only problem is that the world's record for the largest freshwater perch caught is 4 pounds 3 ounces.

So Bush either doubled the world record, and didn't report it, or he's a liar.
