It's hard work doing things "right." That pesky Fourth Amendment means you have to work hard to get a search warrant. Those pesky Geneva Conventions means that you have to work harder when detaining POWs. [There are many other examples, but I gotta go do some "hard work".] PJF understands why the hard work is necessary. GWB, on the other hand, was a slacker in college, getting by with a gentleman's C, a slacker in the National Guard, and is a slacker now. He does not know (or care about) the value of doing things right, nor does he want to work hard to make sure things get done the right way. He just wants to do things his way, regardless of what the Constitution says. And we are all paying the price.

Today is June 5th, it is actually Pentecost, so hug a snake handler today. Kids, do *not* try snake handling at home, Night Owl does not have time for lawsuits.

On the other thread, someone posted a Reuters report of a Christian killed by a lion at the zoo in Kiev. The folks at Reuters totally missed the significance of the date of Pentecost. Had someone at Reuters figured out the date, then the poor soul who met his maker today might have looked a little more logical.

Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening folks!

Happy Monday!

I hope that everyone on the blog had a wonderful weekend!

In today's news:

From Thinkprogress:

"$50 million: Amount outside interests have paid since 2000 to shuttle Members of Congress and their staffs around the world. Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) took one of the most expensive trips -- more than $20,000 "for a one-day trip from Washington to Hidalgo, Texas, to accept an award as The BorderFest Border Texan of the Year."

Man, we have no budget in the DOJ office, yet, this knucklehead can take a $20,000 trip!

Folks,

More news:

1. The Hammer is packing for his retirement:

With retirement four days away, DeLay moves out his papers

http://www.rawstory.com/news/2006/With_retirement_four_days_away_DeLay_0605.html

I wonder if Prosecutor Ronnie Earle helped him pack and send the Hammer with balloons and cake. And DeLay's present should be a conviction for graft!

2. From Thinkprogress:

Supreme Court to rule on race in public education.

“In a pair of cases that could re-ignite decades-old disputes over race and public education, the Supreme Court Monday agreed to decide what role affirmative action should play in the assignment of students to competitive spots in elementary and secondary schools.”

Next thing you know we will be dealing with another 21th century Brown vs. Board of Education case:

Folks,

The spotlight again on Berkowitz and team, the Enron Task Force Team. It is very interesting reading about their strategy to bring down Lay and Skilling. From WSJ:

"Lead task force prosecutor Sean Berkowitz and Lay’s arch nemesis John Hueston have spent a fair amount of time with the New York Times’s Alexi Barrionuevo and Kurt Eichenwald, as evidenced by yesterday’s massively entertaining inside account of the government’s case. The story primarily focuses on the charges against Lay and how the government “eventually defined and pinned down Mr. Lay’s misdeeds by focusing on what amounted to the most basic of childhood transgressions” — lying."

"We learn how hard the task force worked throughout the trial: “The compact Mr. Hueston, a marathon runner, often urged colleagues agents to join him in push-ups and pull-ups to stay alert late at night.” To emphasize the point, Hueston posed for a photograph hanging on the chin-up bar in the doorway of their office in the Houston federal courthouse. Not to be outdone, Berkowitz, a bike enthusiast, rubbed it Skilling’s eye by posing on a motorcycle, perhaps, outside the Bald Eagle, the ultimate symbol of American freedom."

Also, we learned the sacrifice that they had to endure to all involved in Enron case:

When Mr. Berkowitz left his office at 3:30 a.m. on May 16, with the trial's final closing argument just five hours away, he looked around and saw more than a half-dozen bedraggled F.B.I. agents, several of whom had been part of the Enron investigation since it began four years earlier.
One agent's young daughter, a toddler, was so angry at her father for his long absence from home that she refused to come to the phone anymore. Still, none of the agents intended to leave the task force's offices that night. Some of them used a shower in the basement of the federal courthouse to freshen up before that last day of the trial.
DAYS after the jury began deliberating, Mr. Hueston and Mr. Berkowitz took a five-mile jog. Later, they settled into chairs on the deck of Big Woodrow's restaurant on a sweltering Wednesday night. A waitress eased her way through a rowdy crowd, delivering a bucket of crawfish and Corona beers to the prosecutors. As the surrounding crowds watched overhead televisions, cheering on the Houston Astros baseball team, the two men discussed their shared ordeal.
"We wanted to tell each other we were proud of the case we put on, regardless of the verdict," Mr. Hueston said.

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/06/04/business/yourmoney/04enron.html?pagewanted=4&_r=1

Folks, you have to pay the price for success and failure in life. And I know that the agent's daughter will understand in time why her father sacrificed their time for this csse. It is all in the name of justice!

Waterflake,

Seems like the problems that you are enduring are no different here. They has been so many cuts of programs here in the U.S. that it is completely ridiculous. What is insane is that they are promoting healthy foods and obesity problems in the U.S. among adults and children yet the "healthy" foods and produce are too expensive to buy and companies like McDonalds are one of the largest contributors for ads for T.V., sports, etc. Now, the FDA are talking about slimming down on portions of food that we eat. Now, you try telling that to a man who is a full meat and potatoes guy that his dinner on his plate are now in smaller portions!

SDS reports: Just called Lindsay Graham's office and asked if he was celibate. The girl who answered the phone got nasty and asked me if I was. I said no and then said I'm not a hypocrite. Also called Dole's office and asked for her views on adultery. No response from the secretary.

Bill writes: Just called Lamar Alexander, the staffer continually answered "that's not relevant" "these questions are not relevant, I won't answer."

Lily writes: I called the Senators office in Utah, and asked being that the Congress feels it it their duty to get into bedrooms and use the US Constitution to do it, the I would like to know if he and others are prepared to set an example and let the American people know about their indescretions ?

The secratary sho answered his phone said "You know what ma'am we do not take questions like that"

I said, "well if they are ready to get into legistate our personal sex lives, shouldn't they be prepared to answer"?

hehe.. She got all pissy and asked my zip, which I was happy to give to her.

Senator Martinez Office Comments (FL):

So help me God, I called Martinez's office. I said that, given the Senator's interest in protecting marriage combined with Florida's high divorce rate, would he be willing to introduce an amendment to outlaw divorce.

I was told I'd have to submit that question in writing since that had not been previously considered.

I put on my indignantly surprised voice and said, "You mean to tell me that given all the discussion in the Senate about protecting marriage, I'm the first person to bring up this ideas?"

So help me God, her answer was to say, "The Senator is not interested in protecting marriage but in protecting the definition of marriage."

Finally, at least...an honest Senate staffer

Tony Snow Job and Gerbil and company really open the door of trouble when they try to attack gay rights. Since they decide to ban gay marriage, it opens the door to other rights that we have in this country. First immigration and now banning gay marriage. I would like to ask the Gerbil since he is making the gay marriage such a big issue now, what is his thoughts on interracial relationships and marriages in this country?? And what does he think of the Loving vs. Virginia case? It seems that he wants invade the American people's lives and bedrooms. The Gerbil forgets that his own brother is married to a Latino and other politicans have relationships or marriages to other races. An old saying: if you going to clean someone else's house, you better make sure that your own house is cleaned first!

GNC drops Pat Robertson's muscle drink

"NEW YORK, June 5 (UPI) -- U.S. nutritional supplement firm GNC Corp. will no longer sell a protein drink associated with the Rev. Pat Robertson, a noted televangelist.
The corporation, which did not elaborate on the reason for its move, comes despite high praise from the drink's creator, the head of the Christian Broadcasting Network, The New York Times reported Monday.
Robertson, 76, credits his "protein shake" with the ability to leg press 2,000 pounds -- 665 pounds more than the current world record."

http://www.upi.com/NewsTrack/view.php?StoryID=20060605-092200-3457r

I may need way more tin foil . . . Our favorite al Qaeda folks [Mossad to some of you] tend to pick auspicious days to kill people for their big stunts. They do not pick random days. We have not heard from them in a while. What in the world do they have planned for 666 day?

Speaking of mayhem, does anyone know what the planned timetable of the Canadian al Qaeda-inspired would-be fertilizer bombers was? June 30th for Canada Day? It looks like the RCMP are not releasing too much information, which is both OK and frustrating. Contrary to the terrorist ass-kicking judge's approach in Montana, the best espionage is done in secret, without people getting their 15-minutes of fame.

I hear there will be lots of BBQs on Canada Day. >;-)

Batwoman's other secret identity turns heads

"DC Comics says the character, who was brought in originally in 1956 as Batman's love interest, will be reintroduced as a lesbian as part of an effort to diversify its superhero roster. John, I live in Dallas and just got off the phone with Kay Bailey Hutchison's staff. The person who took my question said that even though the Bible might say that a woman who is divorced and then remarries is an adulterer, no Christian really believes that. So, the Bible is really just a quaint notion, sorta like the Geneva Conventions. I will swear under oath that KBH rep said that. When I asked about why this marriage amendment is even being considered amidst the other enormous crises we're dealing with, she said she agreed with me. So, KBH is divorced but doesn't believe what the Bible says about it.

Not sure just what was inacted but some of this did go through...

Tallahassee Bureau

December 15, 2002

TALLAHASSEE -- Florida legislators are preparing to delve next spring into
matters of the heart -- love, marriage and divorce.

Conservative Republicans are proposing ways to tweak Florida's marriage and
divorce laws to keep more marriages intact, even when one spouse is ready to
split.

As marriage and divorce reform proposals percolate in the state Capitol,
moderate-leaning legislators say they doubt major changes will be adopted in
2003.

But backed by the Christian Coalition of Florida and other groups,
conservative legislators are examining a host of options. Some plans under
study include:

- A "cooling-off"' or waiting period -- ranging from six months to a year --
between a filing for divorce and when a marriage dissolution is finalized.
Advocates say applicants for divorce might reconsider their plans if they
have to live temporarily under divorce conditions, such as paying alimony
and child support as well as dealing with legal separation from their spouse
and children.

- Barring divorces involving families with children unless there is "mutual
consent," meaning that both parents would have to seek a divorce. Currently,
divorces can be granted with only one spouse seeking the separation.

- Requiring couples before they wed to define the precise circumstances in
which they would agree to a divorce.

- Mandating more pre-marital and pre-divorce counseling, some of which is
already required by law.
