Let The Games Begin And END...

I love the opening ceremony of the Olympics. I smiled when I read the following:
"Eight women carried the Olympic flag: Italian actress Sophia Loren, Chilean writer Isabel Allende, American actress Susan Sarandon, Nobel Peace-prize winner Wangari Maathai of Kenya, and three Olympic medal winners. They were Nawal El Moutawakel of Morocco, Manuela Di Centa of Italy, and Maria Mutola of Mozambique. The eighth was Cambodian human rights activist Somaly Mam."
I know Isabel, she lives just outside of San Francisco. And yes, she is the niece of Dr. Salvadore Allende (this Wikipedia entry is wrong when it states "who apparently committed suicide during the coup") the democratically elected President of Chile who was assassinated by General Augusto Pinochet, with support from the U.S. Government and American corporate interests in 1973.
The brutal regime of General Pinochet is a perfect example of what can happen to good people when bad people in Washington ignore the rule of law and subscribe to an "ends justify the means" mentality under the guise of "patriotism" and "national security." Personally, I call them criminals.

I am looking forward to watching the Olympics. Olympics brings everyone from all walks of life to compete and represent their countries. This event will certainly take people's mind of the current events that are happening here for at least for several weeks. I am rooting for Michelle Kwan in skating!

Well Fitz it was nice to hear you say so many nice these about the ladies. I rooting for Bode Miller. No I can't ski or do I like snow. But he makes the sport interesting to watch. I went skiing once and a four year old had to teach me. I forgot how to stop so they made a human chain to stop me from going into a building. No more skiing for me. Oh Thanks Biloxi and 6 miles for the information it helps. I was getting a headache trying to figue out what was really going on in this CIA case.

I don't know Isabel Allende but am a huge fan of her work. So kudos to that.

This administration is going full steam ahead and needs to be stopped. Sooner is better than later, hint hint.

I'm with Kit, sooner rather than later.
So Libby's trial date has been sent into somewhat oblivion for 2007, however, the hoopla of his trial will help to further demonstrate during the run-up to election of the prolific corruption, both sides of the aisle. Perhaps one weighter than the other.. hmm, reminds me of the tipping scales of justice somehow.

Nonetheless, there is much further damage this dark administration may cause to the American way of life, and when I write that, I mean the common man, the middle class, the working stiffs, the stay-at-home parents, the kids, the ones who also struggle each month to earn an
honest
living.

These crooks in the Oval, the WHIGS, and Congress have lost touch with what America needs.

The damage wrought by Katrina, Plamegate, Spygate .. I fear what they may do next about the tail wagging the dog on
Iran
N Korea.

Please PJF -- keep at it and bring these crooks to justice.

Every time I turn on CNN or read the news I wince.

A Bush blunder caught:

Here is the article from Raw Story:

CAMBRIDGE, Md. The source of the latest leak from the Bush administration is: President Bush himself.
Thanks to an error by a White House technician, the sound of what were supposed to be private remarks to G-O-P House members was relayed to the White House press corps.
Bush made a brief public speech to lawmakers at their retreat on Maryland's Eastern Shore. He then shooed out reporters and photographers, saying, "I support the free press, let's just get 'em out of the room."
Once they were gone, Bush -- not realizing he was still audible -- said, "I expect this conversation we're about to have to stay in the room." He added, "I know that's impossible in Washington."
Bush then spoke for roughly two minutes on the war on terror and his warrantless eavesdropping program before the outside feed was switched off. On the surveillance, he repeated earlier assertions he'd cleared the program with top government lawyers.

The President
The Vice President
The White House
Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President and Mr. Vice President:

Yesterday, the National Journal and AP reported that the Vice President's former Chief of Staff, I. Lewis (Scooter) Libby, had testified to a federal grand jury that as part of an effort to discredit Ambassador Joseph Wilson and defend your Administration's use of prewar intelligence, he had been authorized by the Vice President and other White House superiors to leak classified information to journalists.(1) Moreover, correspondence filed by Special Prosecutor Patrick J. Fitzgerald also reveals that Mr. Libby has asserted that he had been authorized to disclose to the media a still-classified portion of a National Intelligence Estimate about alleged efforts to develop nuclear weapons to the media.(2)

If this is true, I am concerned that it constitutes an abuse of power at best, and may be outright unlawful at worst. As I understand the applicable declassification regulations, they provide that "[i]nformation shall be declassified as soon as it no longer meets the standard for classification under this order."(3) Under these standards, it would appear that neither classified nuclear information nor Valerie Plame's status as a covert agent or the name of her employer warranted declassification. This is why Special Prosecutor Fitzgerald has stated that these leaks were "a serious breach of public trust"(4)

As a result of these reports, I would like to ask you the following questions:

1. Is the report in the National Journal accurate? Have you or your staffs authorized Mr. Libby or other personnel within the Administration to declassify and leak information to the media relating to the Iraq war and the use of pre-war intelligence on any occasions? If so, please describe.

2. What is the legal basis for authorizing such declassifications and disclosures?

3. On September 30, 2003, the President declared, "[l]isten, I know of nobody - I don't know of anybody in my administration who leaked classified information ... If somebody did leak classified information, I'd like to know it, and we'll take the appropriate action."(5) Do you still stand by the President's pledge and, if so, what action are you planning to take against any individuals who may have authorized the leaks described in the National Journal article?

To the extent you believe any of the information needed to respond to the above questions may be classified or sensitive, I am happy to meet with you or your staffs directly on these matters. I may be reached through my Judiciary Committee office at 202-225-6504, 2142 Rayburn House Office Building, Washington, D.C. 20515. Thank you.

Sincerely,

John Conyers, Jr.
