Fitz misunderstands “doing the right thing”

At Amherst in May, Fitz, who was charming, kept saying that AUSAs get to go to work and “do the right thing.”

Nothing could be further from the truth.

The DOJ is in a shambles in NO SMALL PART because the USAs and their staffers have turned a blind eye to all the corruption. And this includes Fitz.

People who “do the right thing” don’t support the kind of things he does (e.g. the Patriot Act, the death penalty). And they don’t steer their ships into a corrupt pier.

For all the good his office has done in Chicago, Fitz has kept a steady eye on his career. And Comey has loved sharing the limelight.

Someone should have called Abu on his corruption early on. It's gonna take DECADES to undo the damage the current DOJ has allowed.

To the first on the thread: A few weeks ago, some of us on another site got into a discussion of a case in Fla. where a man broke a law by feeding the homeless, went to trial, and was acquitted. The judge told the man he was nice and all but not to break the law again. The upshot of our discussion was that if a law is morally wrong, we have a moral obligation to disobey it. This is what is so sad about Fitzgerald. I have read that it is his position that if a law is on the books, it has to be followed whether good or bad. It's the same sort of view the Wehrmacht officers argued at the end of WWII, that is, that they were only following orders, and I'm sure lawyers under the Nazi regime also argued that they were only obeying the laws.

anon 11:06, you're right. That's why so many of us have been perplexed by the "left's" adoration of Fitzgerald. He represents almost everything progressives detest.

He is humble and bright. No doubt there. But his career is based on allowing criminals to roam free (including those in high places) in far too many cases. And his strict adherence to unethical laws is, to say the least, troubling.

A friend of mine said he's just following the Catholic party line. When they announced he's marrying a divorced woman, she said, "I stand corrected." LOL

But his stances have nothing to do with religious training (e.g. the RC Church deplores the death penalty). He's just a good soldier. And people of good will, including some of this SDNY friends, are disappointed he hasn't been more interested in real justice.

re: Mukasey (from Wiki)

"Mukasey's son, Marc Mukasey, has been assigned by Giuliani's campaign to block Kerik's legal defense team from interviewing witnesses that might assist his defense."

Fitz's pal, Andy McCarthy (both guys prosecuted the Rahman case before Mukasey) is thrilled by the Mukasey appt. and will probably benefit from it.

Heads up, folks. Mukasey / Fitz / Comey / McCarthy are cut from the same cloth.

I've been bothered by the Fitz/Comey connection since Comey made that comment about the only thing worse than being reviled by the left is being revered by them. WTF?

eve's momma, the spin is already falling apart. And it wasn't Fitz's doing. People around him spun him, perhaps starting with Comey's "Ness+sense of humor" comment.

I was reading a thread on another site about Fitz's dating history. He didn't have much patience with professional women. And they're pissed off. His betrothed is a political cliche, the female version of Jack Ryan, the senate candidate -- only less educated. It's like they all read the same script. $$ job then $$ viewed as evil. Please.

Jack Ryan on Wiki:

Ryan spent his childhood in Wilmette, Illinois, with his five siblings, and attended New Trier High School. He graduated from high school in 1977 and went on to Dartmouth College, where he graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. He earned his MBA from Harvard Business School, and his JD from Harvard Law School. After this, he worked for Goldman Sachs as an investment banker, first in New York City, and then in the Chicago branch.

In 2000, after Goldman Sachs went public, Ryan's net worth was in the hundreds of millions. He retired from Goldman and taught part-time at an inner-city Chicago Catholic parochial school, Hales Franciscan High School. He later became a full-time teacher at the school.

BTW, Letzkus went to U. of Illinois.

Deo, I did have a bit of doubt about Jenni when it was reported she was a former investment banker gone all noble/teacher-like. My initial and immediate reaction was: she might be a Daley plant ... a Delilah to hurt my Samson.

Daley and Blagojevich have been looking too confident and cheerful. I wondered if they had an inside track to Fitz through Jenni.

It's just the cynic and skeptic in me.

Back to the original post on this thread. Had Fitz been really brave, he would have gone after Rove. Congress is too slow to do so. Grand juries have defied their gag orders when public safety is at stake. The Bush cabal has been the cause of many deaths, and Fitz knows the back story.

He'll have his pension in a few months. Go out in a blaze of glory, Fitz. Don't be a Cheney lapdog (Lockheed, indeed) like Comey.

11:51 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes, going back to the original post on this thread, would whoever brings up the death penalty now and then spell out what Fitzgerald's actions have been in that area? I know he is pro-capital punishment, but I am interested in actual actions because I know at least one of the fired USAs, the ex-nun in Wisconsin, was supposedly fired because she didn't tow the line on the Bush DOJ trying to circumvent states dragging their feet on implementing executions by cutting short appeals. (I think more than one of the fired was fired for this reason.) The implication is that Fitzgerald is satisfactory to the administration in this regard because he goes along with the policy.

12:48 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'm not the "Death Penalty" poster -- but I do know, when Fitzgerald spoke at Harvard Law School in April, he talked about how they decide their "submission" regarding capital cases. It was chilling. He seemed to think that, just because there's a consensus, it's right.

The crowd was audibly disturbed. The link may still be at the HLS site. It was the Cox Coleman Richardson Award dinner. I love Fitz -- but that was a shocker.

Christopher Hitchens had an excellent article in Vanity Fair years and years ago about the "death penalty lottery". Out of all the convictions which could receive the death penalty, only a very few do and of those only a very few are carried out. The executed are those who could not have afforded a "good" defense lawyer and the appeals process, in other words, the poor and minorities. Hundreds of innocent people have been wrongly convicted and executed in US history and DNA technology has recentlly helped prove this. This is equally as sickening to me as children like Jessica Lundsford being murdered.

But, as someone who was president of the math club in high school, I'm glad when any former geek gets the pretty girl (and I'm female).

My best female friend is 49 and never married. She's beautiful, successful, kind, and very smart. She spent her 20s getting educated, her 30s working non-stop, and her 40s taking care of her parents. Now that she's "free" of obligations, she's looking at FINALLY having a life of her own. And I hope she gets it. It's hard for her to find someone without a ton of baggage (including ex-wives). Bridget & Co. thought the six-year age difference would seem appropriate to him because that was the difference between his parents. But a man who wants children saw her as far too old as anything more than a fling.

Such men are attracted to women to are the age their mothers were when they were born. Thus, 33 was perfect.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic illness that causes immense physical pain and debilitating fatigue. Classified as a syndrome, fibromyalgia is not a disease. Instead it is a condition that causes many different symptoms. These symptoms affect all systems in the body. Fibromyalgia plagues up to 5% of the population, with 6 million sufferers in the United States alone. The name fibromyalgia comes from "fibro" meaning fibrous tissue (such as tendons and ligaments), "my" meaning muscles, and "algia" meaning pain.

I act sane. Looking at me, interacting with me in public, nothing remarkable. That's the act. So I've had and continue to have a professional life, of a kind. Sit on this Board, work on that project. I need alot of down time.

In my private life, relationships - I'm not able to be sane.

That's why I oppose the sexualization of children. It doesn't impair intellectually. It's emotionally damaging.

Tradition dictates simple wedding and no veil. However, modern brides forego tradition and have the wedding of their choice. I agree with the latter, as a wedding is a personal celebration and should be done to the pleasure of the bride and groom.
All than emphasis on "2nnd" wedding attire is offensive, as it marks the bride as "not a virgin", which is no one business to start with.
Etiquette is elitist crap.

I thought 3 months was the waiting period for Catholic marriages, but it can be waived in the case of mature individuals. I can't see F. getting married outside the church because their children would not be able to be baptized in the church.
